Your Hero’s Journey is a key transformational tool for understanding and creating great change in your life. It’s also an important power-up that can take your everyday life far beyond common experiences with the transcendence you will find in words, story, and image. Whether personally or professionally your Hero’s Journey can be the catalyst that gives you greater insight, greater progress, and greater reward.
The Hero’s Journey reflects the power of Story to transform your life. You can tell more than one Hero’s Journey story for yourself, and you can have multiple story arcs and timelines. No matter what you choose, a focus on your Hero’s Journey will change your life forever in all the ways you want it to.
No matter what you choose, a focus on your Hero’s Journey will change your life forever in all the ways you want it to.
For Hero’s Journey month we’ll explore a blend of three things: Transformative Story, the Hero’s Journey structure itself, and the Sacred Dreaming realization that Story and Tale can determine who you become. There are ordinary everyday narratives, and there are narratives of adventure and fantastical power, and both kinds can weave into and out of one another as they enrich your life.
The Hero’s Journey as I’ll work it with you is much like the Sacred Dream as described by Dr. Alberto Villoldo:
"A sacred dream launches you to a destiny beyond simply not dying, or of being reasonably happy as you strive to avoid discomfort. It encourages you to explore the mysteries of life and of love, to glimpse a reality beyond death and discover a timeless truth for yourself. It demands that you act boldly and courageously, and not collude with the consensual -- that which everyone agrees on and no one questions."
In the same way, your Hero’s Journey has a much wider, broader scope that can lead you to the deep fulfillment you seek.
As Villoldo notes:
"A sacred dream is always bigger than you are and it has a destination that is mysterious. So be sure that you select a great dream, for your story will inevitably take you there."
Welcome to your Hero’s Journey.
Your Hero's Journey Homework: What's your initial story?
Preparation: Set up a journaling method, whether your favorite notebook, on your laptop, or using an online mode such as Google Docs. Make it something you can easily access.
Write out your life arc in the form of a story, as if you were telling someone a story about the man or woman you are. Don't name yourself - just say, "Once there was a woman/man (or girl/boy) who...". You can focus on career story (where are you in your career story arc? what brought you there?), or academic, or whole-life. Just tell it as a story of every day life.
Where does your story arc stop as it brings you to the present day? What are you doing right now in life, and why? Where do you feel your arc is - beginning, middle, end? Where do you long to go from this point in the story?
How will you envision your story arc changing today?
